Maryland, founded in 1632 by Sir George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, was the 7th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. It also has the 4th best design of any state, territorial, or provincial flag in the United States and Canada and the only U.S. state flag to be directly based on European heraldry. Blazon: Quarterly, 1st and 4th, paly of six Or and Sable, a bend counterchanged (for Calvert); 2nd and 3rd, quarterly argent and gules, a cross bottony counterchanged (for Crossland).
